Second AI outbreak detected, this time in breeder hens in Toledo

Confirmed detection of a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak, subtype H5N1, on a poultry farm dedicated to the rearing of breeder hens in the municipality of Alcolea de Tajo, province of Toledo, Spain. This is the second outbreak on a poultry farm confirmed in 2025, following the first on 18 July in Extremadura on a farm housing 7,000 turkeys.

The most likely route of virus introduction into the farm is considered to have been through indirect contact with wild birds, given that during the previous week laboratory tests were being carried out to confirm two cases of HPAI in wild geese at two separate locations in Extremadura: Casar de Cáceres (province of Cáceres) and Corte de Peleas (province of Badajoz). In both cases, dead wild geese were found in urban ponds, leading to the collection of official samples by the Official Veterinary Services (OVS) of the Junta de Extremadura; these samples tested positive at the regional laboratory and were subsequently confirmed by the LCV in Algete.
