Spain has officially confirmed the presence of HPAI subtype H5N1 in the latest 2025 outbreak, which occurred on Wednesday, 24 December, at a farm of 235,000 commercial laying hens in Bellpuig, Lleida.\n\nWith this outbreak — the first of 2025 in Catalonia and the 15th in Spain — the total number of farm birds affected amounts to 2,931,951, of which 94.38% were commercial layers, 2.81% breeders, 1.84% broilers and 0.97% turkeys.\n\nOf the 15 outbreaks, 9 occurred on laying hen farms, 3 on turkey farms, 2 on breeder farms and 1 on a broiler farm.

Newcastle disease reappears in Spain after three years with no cases

This is the first outbreak of Newcastle disease in poultry in Spain since June 2022, in Almería. When that 2022 outbreak occurred, Spain had gone nearly 13 years without a single case, as the penultimate case was in November 2009, when it was detected on a game bird farm in the province of Guipúzcoa.

What is Newcastle Disease?

Newcastle disease, internationally recognised as one of the most devastating pathologies for global poultry production, represents a constant challenge to food security, the economic stability of nations, and comprehensive animal health. This viral condition is characterised by extreme transmissibility and pathogenic variability ranging from inapparent infections to outbreaks with mortality reaching 100% in susceptible populations. Since its initial identification in 1926 in Java, the virus has demonstrated a remarkable capacity for evolutionary adaptation, affecting more than 250 avian species and compelling the creation of international regulatory frameworks under the supervision of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

Avian influenza doesn’t take holidays: 15th confirmed case of the year...

On 24 December 2025, the Generalitat de Catalunya activated a health alert after confirming a positive case of avian influenza at a laying hen poultry farm located in Bellpuig, province of Lleida. The outbreak has required authorities to order the culling of all birds on the holding and to impose strict isolation measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Spain had gone more than 60 days without any outbreak, as following the last one on 20 October involving broilers, no further cases had been recorded on poultry farms.
