Monitoring of Wind-Borne Particulate Matter Entering Poultry Farms Through Air Inlets:...

The study investigates the potential risk of particulate matter (PM) transported by wind, contaminated with faeces from wild birds infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIv), entering poultry farms through air inlets. The primary objective of the study was to measure the nature and quantity of PM entering poultry sheds through air inlets. Researchers collected PM samples from air inlets of two poultry farms infected with HPAIv and analyzed them for the presence of AIV, Campylobacter and Salmonella. The study results indicate that wind-borne PM and arthropods can enter poultry air inlets and potentially be contaminated with HPAIv or other pathogens. Therefore, it is recommended to limit this possible introduction route.
