The 10 objectives of the British Poultry Council for the English poultry industry.

The British Poultry Council (BPC) has established a roadmap to ensure the sustainability and security of the British poultry system, with a particular focus on the sustainability of poultry production and food safety.

The key objectives include:

  1. Food Safety: Producing safe, affordable and nutritious food for all, addressing social and climate inequalities. Production must have a low environmental impact to ensure the sustainability of the food system.
  2. Fair and Efficient Trade: Adopting commercial approaches that enable world-class domestic production standards. This includes collaborating with the government to mitigate disease-related trade barriers and ensuring stable and efficient poultry production.
  3. Welfare and Environment: Maintaining high animal health and welfare standards while working towards environmental targets such as Net Zero. Balancing animal welfare with environmental sustainability is essential.
  4. Secure and Reliable Supply Chain: Ensuring sustainable, safe and reliable supply chains that are accessible and affordable for the average consumer. Production must be sustainable and capable of meeting future challenges without compromising quality.
  5. Avian Disease: Managing and mitigating the challenges of avian influenza through collaboration with the government and the global community, exploring measures such as vaccination and ensuring that disease-related trade barriers do not hinder production.
  1. Safe and Skilled Workforce: Investing in a safe and skilled workforce is crucial for food security. Promoting inclusion and job security for all workers across the poultry production chain.
  2. Investment and Self-Sufficiency: Promoting investments that ensure the United Kingdom’s self-sufficiency in food production, with a focus on local producers. Ensuring an economic environment that supports investment and productivity.
  3. Global Collaboration: Engaging in global dialogues to ensure that decisions on trade and animal welfare are science-based and do not compromise industry productivity.
  4. Innovation and Continuous Improvement: Fostering innovation and continuous improvement in poultry production to maintain and enhance welfare and sustainability standards.
  5. Government Policy and Support: Working with the government to develop policies and support measures that benefit the poultry industry, including resource management and the implementation of equitable border controls.

These objectives focus on creating a sustainable and resilient food system that benefits both the population and the environment, ensuring the long-term viability and competitiveness of the British poultry industry.
