UVESA acquires a hatchery in La Rioja, boosting its weekly capacity by 200,000 chicks and planning to acquire two new breeder farms in 2025

Grupo Uvesa, a benchmark company with over 60 years of experience in the Spanish poultry industry, has taken a significant step in its expansion plan with the acquisition of a hatchery in Alfaro (La Rioja). This transaction marks a milestone for the Navarrese company by establishing its first operational centre in the autonomous community of La Rioja.

The facilities, previously managed by HG&P-Layers Ibérica and dedicated to the production of table eggs, will undergo a transformation to focus on broiler meat production, one of Grupo Uvesa’s main business lines. The hatchery has an operational capacity of 230,000 eggs per week, yielding a production of approximately 200,000 day-old chicks per week. According to Uvesa, the facility is fully equipped and ready to commence operations, enabling the company to enhance its autonomy and efficiency within the poultry supply chain and to respond swiftly to market demand.

This strategic acquisition will not only strengthen the group’s production capacity to meet growing market demand, but will also ensure the preservation of local employment. The plant’s eight current employees will remain in their positions, and one new member of staff is expected to join next month, bringing the workforce to nine.

Looking ahead, Grupo Uvesa plans to further expand its presence in Alfaro through the acquisition of two new breeder farms during 2025. This additional investment will create five new jobs in the area and will allow the company to increase its hatching egg production capacity, consolidating the group’s position in the region.

Grupo Uvesa’s management has expressed its satisfaction with this transaction, highlighting that it reflects the company’s “firm commitment to the development of the poultry sector, the strengthening of the local industrial fabric, and the promotion of sustainable, quality production“. The company has also expressed its gratitude for the institutional support received in carrying out this significant investment.

With this addition, Grupo Uvesa reinforces its position as a leading player in the Spanish poultry sector, expanding its network of production centres to meet both current and future hatchery needs. Uvesa’s poultry network now comprises three hatcheries (Tudela, Burgos and Alfaro), four poultry processing plants (Tudela, Málaga, Cuéllar and Rafelbunyol), two further-processing plants (Burgos and Cuéllar), in addition to its entire integrated broiler farm network. The group also operates four feed mills and strategically located sales offices.

In the BROILER SECTOR in Spain, UVESA‘s slaughter volume in 2023 was 161,200 tonnes of chicken meat (11.3% market share), positioning it as the second largest chicken producer in Spain, behind VALL COMPANYS, which slaughtered 306,000 tonnes of chicken meat in 2023 (24.8% market share).
