Colombian poultry industry closes 2024 with historic milestones and sustained growth

The National Federation of Poultry Farmers of Colombia (Fenavi) concludes 2024 celebrating exceptional achievements that consolidate the poultry sector as one of the main drivers of economic, social and food development in the country. The results achieved this year not only demonstrate the sector’s capacity for innovation and resilience, but also its direct impact on food security and the wellbeing of millions of Colombians.

Egg production reached 18,019 million units, achieving a per capita consumption of 342 eggs, reflecting the high nutritional impact of this essential food and positioning Colombia as the third highest egg-consuming country in the world, after Mexico and Japan.

The broiler sector recorded production of 1,836,032 tonnes, with a per capita consumption of 36.8 kilograms, establishing itself as the primary source of animal protein in the Colombian diet. The poultry sector produced 2,907,600 tonnes of protein, reaffirming itself as the most nutritious and accessible option for the population. In 2024, the poultry sector’s growth rate was 3.0%, driven by its constant innovation and commitment to excellence.

The total production value reached 27,000 billion pesos, reflecting its strategic importance within the national productive fabric. The country has 100 processing plants (slaughterhouses) and 6,032 certified poultry farms, ensuring high standards of quality and sustainability in production. More than 350,000 Colombians work in the poultry sector, which continues to be a key pillar of the rural and urban economy.

Key milestones of Colombian poultry farming in 2024

  1. International expansion into the Chinese market
    This year marked a turning point for Colombian poultry farming with the launch of the sanitary admissibility process for exporting poultry to the Chinese market, considered one of the most demanding and lucrative in the world. During the XV China International Meat Conference, held in Shanghai and organised by the China Chamber of Commerce of Importers and Exporters of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-products (CFNA), Fenavi’s Executive President, Gonzalo Moreno, presented a detailed overview of poultry production in Colombia.
    This achievement represents a strategic milestone in the sector’s international expansion and opens a window of opportunity to diversify export markets.
  2. International recognition at the Ovum 2024 Congress
    Fenavi was recognised as a regional leader in the promotion of poultry and eggs at the Ovum 2024 Latin American Poultry Congress. It won notable awards, including Best Integrated Campaign and Best Trade Association Campaign, for its communication initiatives.

The Fenavi 2024 Congress attracted 3,900 attendees from 25 countries and featured 230 exhibitors, consolidating its position as the most important poultry sector event in the region.

  1. Record production and leadership in egg consumption
    In 2024, egg production exceeded 18,000 million units, reaching a per capita consumption of 342 eggs, positioning Colombia among the top three egg consumers worldwide.
  2. Solidarity on World Egg Day
    Fenavi led a campaign donating one million eggs through the Food Banks Association (ABACO), benefiting thousands of vulnerable Colombian families.
  3. Effie Awards 2024 for the Colombian Chicken Festival
    The Colombian Chicken Festival won in the Experiential Marketing category, standing out against major international brands. This recognition underscores the creativity and effectiveness of Fenavi’s marketing strategies.
