Sweden, the fourth country to report active cases of Newcastle Disease

This is the first case of Newcastle disease in Sweden since May.

According to information published by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), a flock of approximately 18,000 laying hens in Ödeshög, Sweden, was affected by Newcastle disease in early October 2024.

The WOAH report indicates that the farm owners observed a drop in egg production at the facility and noted abnormalities in the eggs being laid. Samples were immediately collected from the hens using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, which returned positive results without delay.

Control measures, which were implemented immediately, included zoning, traceability and movement control surveillance within the restricted zone, as well as depopulation of the entire flock. Additional measures to be implemented include disinfection, destruction of animal-origin products, surveillance outside the restricted zone, and official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste.

The source of the infection is listed as unknown or inconclusive.

Sweden had recorded no cases of Newcastle disease since May, and WOAH declared the country free of the disease in July.

The only other countries with active Newcastle disease reports on the WOAH website in 2024 are Poland, Brazil and Israel. The most recent cases in those countries were reported in September, July and May, respectively.
