Huevos Guillén will produce two out of every three eggs in cage-free systems by 2025

Thanks to the new and substantial investments planned at its farms, Huevos Guillén will produce 2 out of every 3 eggs in cage-free systems by early 2025.

This brings Guillén closer to its commitment to achieving 100% of its egg production in alternative systems, namely, eggs from free-range hens and barn hens.

This commitment stems from the company’s conviction that it can improve the animal welfare of its hens, and in response to growing social demand for responsible animal production. In this regard, the October 2023 Eurobarometer indicated that Spanish consumers are also in favour of eliminating cages and advocating for better conditions for farm animals; 97% consider it very important or important to ensure that farm animals have sufficient feed and an environment adapted to meet their basic needs (e.g., mud, straw, etc., depending on the species); 96% consider it very important or important to provide farm animals with sufficient space to move around, stretch and stand up.

Following the award of the Best Egg Award 2022, granted by CIWF, the Huevos Guillén group has expanded its commitment and, in addition to cages, will also phase out enriched colony systems, in order to safeguard hen welfare by eliminating restrictions on movement.

We are a multi-generational farming company in which the care of our hens has always been at the heart of our decisions, and their welfare is a key pillar of our values. We know that producing quality eggs means attending to every detail, and for that, the animal welfare of our flocks is essential. All of the company’s professionals are committed to animal health and welfare, and we have been investing for years to make our processes the most modern, advanced and responsible, in a continuous drive for improvement.” stated current CEO Ximo Guillén.

These actions aimed at improving the living conditions of all their flocks are demonstrated on a day-to-day basis through the Animal Welfare Certificate, based on an integrated and standardised methodology for the ongoing welfare assessment of laying hens. This demonstrates Huevos Guillén’s commitment to best practices, thereby ensuring a high standard in animal welfare.

The ultimate objective is to place the consumer at the centre of its business strategy, as consumers are increasingly sensitive to animal welfare issues and demand greater transparency throughout the food chain.
