H5N1 avian influenza outbreak detected in wild geese in Extremadura

An outbreak of avian influenza has been detected in the municipality of Don Benito (Badajoz), Extremadura. This outbreak, identified as the first case of avian influenza in wild birds in Extremadura in 2025, was confirmed on Friday 23 May 2025 by the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza in Algete, Madrid.

The detection occurred following the discovery of several dead geese on the Doña Blanca estate. Official veterinary services collected samples from these birds, which tested positive for the virus.

The subtype identified is H5N1. It is clarified that this subtype does not possess significant zoonotic potential, meaning that the possibility of transmission to humans is very low. Nevertheless, it is recommended to minimise unnecessary contact with birds showing clinical signs or found dead in the field.

At present, there is no evidence of outbreaks in poultry.

As a preventive measure, the Junta de Extremadura has prohibited the presence of poultry or other captive birds at livestock shows, fairs, exhibitions and cultural events, as well as any outdoor gathering of poultry or other captive birds in the Don Benito district, which has been declared an affected area. This prohibition is based on the definition of animal gathering centres set out in Animal Health Act 8/2003.

The Junta de Extremadura has issued a reassuring statement, confirming that animal health services remain vigilant and that all protocols to prevent and detect new cases, should they arise, are fully active. The disease has been identified as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, a variant that circulates seasonally among migratory wild birds.
