BroilerNet presents the winning Good Practices from the first cycle of the innovation network

BroilerNet is a pioneering initiative in Europe, focused on improving the sustainability and resilience of the broiler sector. With the participation of partners from 13 European countries, BroilerNet has identified innovative practices that address challenges in animal welfare, sustainability and animal health management. This collaborative effort is carried out through national networks of poultry professionals and other relevant stakeholders who share their innovative ideas.

Spain and its Role in BroilerNet

Spain plays a prominent role in BroilerNet, represented by the Institute of Agri-food Research and Technology (IRTA) and the Catalan Poultry Federation (FAC). IRTA acts as scientific partner and coordinator in the field of animal health management, while FAC participates as a producer partner. The collaboration between these entities has been crucial in identifying and promoting best practices within the Spanish poultry sector.

First Cycle of Challenge Identification and Good Practices

The first cycle of BroilerNet, focused on identifying challenges and good practices, has come to an end. Thematic Expert Networks, composed of specialists from various European countries, discussed and ranked the proposed good practices. The BroilerNet champions were selected for having provided the best solutions to the main challenges in each of the three themes: sustainability, animal welfare and animal health management.

Challenges and Winners in Sustainability

Identified Challenges

  1. Carbon neutrality and environmental impact
  2. Feed sources and feed quality
  3. Energy management

Good Practice Winners

  1. Transfer of used litter to produce fertiliser: This practice not only reduces waste but also provides a valuable resource for agriculture.
  2. Promotion of insects as a protein source: Insects are a sustainable and nutritious source of protein for broilers, reducing dependence on conventional feeds.
  3. Electricity generation from photovoltaic systems: The use of solar energy reduces the carbon footprint and lowers energy costs.

Challenges and Winners in Animal Welfare

Identified Challenges

  1. Training and education of poultry farmers
  2. Genetics and breeding
  3. Climate management in poultry houses

Good Practice Winners

  1. Internal audits on on-farm emergency slaughter: These ensure that slaughter practices are carried out humanely and efficiently.
  2. Elevated platforms as enrichment material: These improve the environment for broilers, promoting their welfare and natural behaviours.
  3. Footpad health programme: This programme helps prevent and treat footpad disorders, improving the overall health of broilers.

Challenges and Winners in Animal Health Management

Identified Challenges

  1. Improving biosecurity
  2. Combating avian influenza
  3. Reducing antimicrobial use

Good Practice Winners

  1. Exclusive use of equipment by zone and house: This practice minimises the risk of disease transmission and improves biosecurity on farms.
  2. Self-assessment tool for avian influenza risk factors: This helps poultry farmers identify and mitigate risks associated with avian influenza.
  3. Central heating via water circulation using renewable energy: This provides an efficient and sustainable solution for maintaining adequate temperature in poultry houses.

Dissemination of Good Practices

Fact sheets on the top five practices and other selected ones will be disseminated through the Broiler Knowledge Hub, accessible on the project website www.broilernet.eu. This resource is a valuable tool for poultry farmers and other sector stakeholders, providing detailed and accessible information on the most innovative and effective practices.

Impressions from Dr. Stefan Gunnarsson

Dr. Stefan Gunnarsson, coordinator of BroilerNet, expressed his satisfaction with the results achieved: “More than 400 people from the European broiler sector have contributed to BroilerNet. It is gratifying to see how dedicated and enthusiastic the participants in the national networks have been. They have identified important challenges in the sector and have helped one another to find good practices from across Europe. Our thematic expert groups have contributed scientific and practical expertise to ensure quality throughout the process. We hope that the intensive work will be useful for broiler farmers across Europe and, in the long term, contribute to increasing resilience in EU broiler production.”

Conclusions and Future of BroilerNet

BroilerNet has proven to be an effective platform for fostering innovation and collaboration in the broiler sector. The good practices identified not only address current challenges but also prepare the sector for a more sustainable and resilient future. With the continued participation of sector experts and professionals, BroilerNet will continue to be a beacon of innovation and continuous improvement in European poultry farming.
