Poultry prices break records: broiler price exceeds 3 Euros/kg for the first time in EU history

Broiler prices in the EU have reached a new all-time high, while poultry production shows a slight increase and self-sufficiency remains solid.

  • Record prices in the EU: The EU broiler price exceeded 3 €/kg at the end of June, up 11.2% year-on-year and 4% month-on-month, while prices in the USA and Brazil have fallen and remain at significant discounts.
  • Poultry production and exports: EU poultry production increased slightly in May, although it remains marginally below last year’s levels, and is expected to exceed 14 million tonnes in 2025, with consumption close to 13 million tonnes. The EU maintains a self-sufficiency rate of 108% and exports solid volumes, with the United Kingdom standing out as the main destination.

Poultry prices break records: broiler price exceeds 3 Euros/kg for the first time in EU history

Brussels, 7 July 2025 – The poultry meat market in the European Union is undergoing a significant transformation, marked by a historic milestone: the weekly average price of broilers in the EU has exceeded 3 euros per kilogram, reaching 306.34 €/100 kg. This price increase reflects a complex dynamic of production, consumption and international trade that is reshaping the European poultry sector.

While broiler prices have started to fall in Brazil and the USA during the second quarter of 2025, in Europe the upward trend continues unabated

As reported in the latest official EU “Poultry Meat Dashboard“, dated 2 July 2025, the weekly average EU broiler price stands at 306.34 € per 100 kg, exceeding both the 2023 averages and the 2020–2024 average.

Compared with other key markets, the EU price is notably higher than in the United States (259.69 €/100 kg) and Brazil (116.32 €/100 kg).

EU poultry meat production is dominated by broilers, which account for 83.8% of the total, followed by turkey (11.9%), duck (3.0%) and other poultry (1.2%). For the year 2024, the EU’s estimated total production stands at 14,048 thousand tonnes, representing a 5.5% increase compared to 2023.

The leading poultry-producing countries in the EU are:

  • Poland (PL) with 2,892 thousand tonnes (21% of the total).
  • Spain (ES) with 1,803 thousand tonnes (13% of the total).
  • France (FR) with 1,722 thousand tonnes (12% of the total).
  • Germany (DE) with 1,570 thousand tonnes (11% of the total).
  • Italy (IT) with 1,391 thousand tonnes (10% of the total).
  • The Netherlands (NL) with 841 thousand tonnes (6% of the total). These six Member States account for 73% of total EU production.

Regarding self-sufficiency, forecasts indicate that the EU will maintain a poultry meat self-sufficiency rate of 108% in 2025, suggesting that domestic production is sufficient to cover consumption demand. EU broiler production forecasts show sustained growth for 2024 and 2025.

Brazilian chicken imports into the EU rise by 30.1% and imports from China by 71.8%

The EU’s poultry meat trade with non-EU countries (Extra-EU) shows mixed trends for the period January to March 2024 and 2025:

  • Extra-EU Imports: Have recorded a significant increase of 13.7%, rising from 224,139 tonnes in 2024 to 254,756 tonnes in 2025. The main import partners for the EU are:
    • Brazil: Imports from Brazil increased sharply by 30.1%, from 68,368 to 88,937 tonnes.
    • Ukraine: Imports from Ukraine decreased by 5.5%, from 55,903 to 52,812 tonnes.
    • United Kingdom: Imports from the United Kingdom increased by 9.5%, from 44,154 to 48,366 tonnes.
    • Thailand: Imports from Thailand showed a slight increase of 2.5%, from 40,362 to 41,355 tonnes.
    • China: Imports from China experienced an impressive growth of 71.8%, from 10,471 to 17,987 tonnes.

  • Extra-EU Exports: EU exports increased marginally by 0.8%, from 515,820 to 520,103 tonnes. The main destinations for EU exports are:
    • United Kingdom: Exports to the United Kingdom decreased slightly by 0.4%, from 182,169 to 181,360 tonnes.
    • Ghana: Exports to Ghana grew significantly by 45.4%, from 32,329 to 46,999 tonnes.
    • Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo): Exports to this destination increased by 8.9%, from 28,197 to 30,698 tonnes.
    • Vietnam: Exports to Vietnam fell by 16.3%, from 20,095 to 16,826 tonnes.
    • Ukraine: Exports to Ukraine decreased by 2.6%, from 16,257 to 15,827 tonnes.

The leading exporters of poultry products worldwide (up to March 2025) are Brazil, the United States, the EU, Thailand and Ukraine. The main importers include China + Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Japan, Mexico, the EU and the United Arab Emirates.

At the global level, world poultry meat trade has experienced a slight contraction of 0.7%. However, global trends in broiler placements and the broiler sector show growth of 4.5% and 11.5% respectively.

This record increase in the EU broiler price, the significant price differential with the USA and the vast cost gap with Brazil, highlight the considerably higher costs in animal welfare, sustainability, labour, etc. faced by European poultry producers compared to their counterparts in the rest of the world.
