FACUA has carried out a comparative analysis of the price evolution of these products across six major retail chains in the country.

Mercadona leads egg price increases, with an average rise of 19.6% so far this year. Meanwhile, Carrefour is the chain selling the brand and variety that has recorded the largest single increase, at 40.8%. These are two of the conclusions drawn from the comparative study carried out by FACUA-Consumidores en Acción on a sample of 66 brands, formats, qualities, sizes and categories of hen eggs on sale at six major retail chains (see tables).

FACUA carried out this comparative price analysis by visiting supermarkets and using its website super.FACUA.org, a tool where consumers can track the historical price fluctuations of each product, compare them across chains and discover which ones have risen the most today, over the past week or the past few months. This association’s website monitors the prices of hundreds of food products at Alcampo, Carrefour, Dia, Eroski, Hipercor and Mercadona.

This study took into account eggs of different brands, formats and grades. This rise in egg prices has been occurring throughout the current month, with Mercadona being the first to apply these increases across all its products on 4 March.

By supermarket chain, the chain chaired by Juan Roig is the one that has applied the largest egg price increases. According to the association’s analysis, which at Mercadona was conducted across 6 formats, qualities, sizes and categories, prices have risen by an average of almost 20% in the first quarter of 2025. The largest increase has been seen in the dozen medium M eggs, which went from €2.08 in January to €2.60 in March (25% more).

At Carrefour (12 products analysed), the average increase has been 16.2%. Although this is below Mercadona’s figure, the French chain stands out for having applied the largest increase to a specific brand and variety of eggs: the dozen El Mercado fresh eggs, grade L-XL, which went from €2.74 at the beginning of January to €3.86 in mid-March (40.8% more expensive).

At Dia (8 products analysed), eggs have risen by an average of 13.8% over this same period. The product that has increased the most in price at this supermarket has been the dozen class M fresh eggs under the own-brand label, which rose by 24% (from €2.10 to €2.60).

At Hipercor (19 products analysed), eggs currently cost an average of 6.4% more than at the beginning of the year. At this chain, the product that has seen the greatest price increase has been the dozen barn-raised hen eggs under the El Corte Inglés brand, grade L, which went from €2.58 to €3.29 over these months (27.5% more).

At Eroski (11 products analysed), the average increase for this type of product has been 10%. In this case, the largest price rise has been seen in the dozen own-brand fresh L eggs, whose price went from €2.28 in January to €2.80 in mid-March (23% more).

Meanwhile, at Alcampo (10 products analysed), eggs have risen by an average of 1.3% so far this year. However, four of the products assessed have actually fallen in price, by as much as 24% in the case of the dozen Corral de Monegros free-range eggs, grade M-L category A, which went from €3.56 to €2.69. Curiously, the largest price increase at this chain has occurred in the half-dozen eggs of the same brand, size and category, which went from €1.97 in January to €2.35 in March (19% more).
